Steel 1.2360M (X50CrMoV8-1 / ~AISI A8 mod) in Knifemaking – Properties and Applications

The 1.2360 mod steel we offer, also known as X50CrMoV8-1, which is the European equivalent of AISI A8 mod steel, is a modified cold-work tool steel. It is characterized by high hardness, good wear resistance, and significant toughness. These properties make it applicable in various industries, including knife production.

Presented here modified version (1.2360M) has a higher chromium content (approx. 8.2%) and lower vanadium content (approx. 0.5%) than the unmodified version (1.2360).

Steel 1.2360 mod contains carefully balanced elements that provide its exceptional properties:

Properties of Steel 1.2360M

Hardness and Wear Resistance

Steel 1.2360 mod achieves a hardness range of 50–60 HRC after proper heat treatment. High hardness translates into excellent wear resistance, making knives made from this steel retain sharpness for an extended period, even under intensive use.

Toughness and Mechanical Strength

One of the key advantages of this steel is its toughness, meaning its ability to absorb impact without cracking. This makes knives made from 1.2360 mod more resistant to chipping and breaking compared to other high-hardness tool steels, such as D2 (1.2379).

Dimensional Stability

During heat treatment, this steel exhibits excellent dimensional stability, meaning its structure does not undergo significant changes under temperature variations. This is crucial for precision applications such as industrial knives and cutting tools.

Corrosion Resistance

Steel 1.2360 mod contains approximately 8% chromium, which enhances its corrosion resistance but does not classify it as stainless steel. Therefore, it requires proper maintenance, especially in humid environments. Protective coatings and regular oiling can significantly extend its lifespan.

Application of Steel 1.2360M (X50CrMoV8-1 / ~AISI A8 mod) in Knifemaking

Industrial Knives

Steel 1.2360 mod is widely used in the production of industrial knives that must withstand high mechanical loads and abrasion. Key applications include:

Wood shredding knives (e.g., in the woodworking and paper industries),
Recycling and metal cutting knives,
Knives for processing plastics and composite materials.

Custom Knives

In the custom knife world, steel 1.2360 mod is not as popular as other steels, such as D2 (1.2379) or O2 (1.2842). However, its unique combination of wear resistance and high toughness makes it an interesting choice for some knifemakers.

Examples of applications in custom knives:

Survival and bushcraft knives – Due to its high toughness, it is suitable for batoning and other demanding tasks,
Utility knives – Performs well in applications where long-lasting sharpness and wear resistance are essential.

Heat Treatment of 1.2360M Steel

Heat treatment difficulty shown at the top of this page reflects the most common choice in our survey of Polish knifemakers, prepared with input from an experienced heat treater. Please treat it as community guidance, not a specification.

“EASY-TO-HARDEN” denotes a more forgiving steel — one that delivers predictable, useful results even with minor deviations in process parameters.

“DIFFICULT-TO-HARDEN” calls for tight process control; small mistakes can quickly degrade the final outcome.

Heat treatment is a set of processes dependent on many variables, including knife thickness, the type of furnace and process atmosphere, soaking time and temperature, the method and temperature of cooling, as well as tempering parameters.

Hardening of 1.2360M Steel

Austenitizing

In material data sheets and industry references, 1.2360M / 1.2360 mod (X50CrMoV8-1) is often described as the european equivalent of AISI A8 mod (“chipper steel”) - these designations are frequently listed side by side as names for the same material class.

Different manufacturers and distributors specify different austenitizing temperature ranges:

Böhler specifies 1000–1040°C (1830–1900°F) for K329;
Lohmann specifies 1000–1050°C (1830–1925°F) for 1.2360.05;
Bestar specifies 1020–1050°C (1870–1925°F) for 1.2360 mod / A8 mod.

In literature on A8 Modified steel (an older Latrobe data sheet), using 1040°C (1900°F) provides the optimum combination of wear resistance and toughness. Some of our customers also confirm using this austenitizing temperature.

At high temperature, steel is prone to oxidation and changes in carbon content (carburization or decarburization). Vacuum heat treatment largely eliminates this risk. During heating in a muffle furnace, the part can be protected by sealing it in stainless heat-treating foil. Remove the foil immediately before quenching, as it slows heat transfer.

Time in furnace at the target temperature, from the moment the steel reaches a uniform temperature: 15–30 minutes (Böhler and Bestar) and 20–30 minutes (Latrobe).

Practical austenitizing guidelines:

The thicker the blade, the longer it should stay in the furnace.
Keeping the steel in the furnace too long can lead to grain growth; too short a time leads to incomplete austenitizing (incomplete microstructural transformation). Put simply: at the correct temperature, leaving the steel in the furnace a little longer usually does less harm than taking it out too early. The biggest mistake is using an incorrect austenitizing temperature.

Quenching

Quenching media: air, oil, salt bath at 500–550°C (932–1022°F).

With thin parts, quenching 1.2360M steel in oil can cause distortion because heat extraction may be uneven, generating stresses that can “pull” the part into a curve. To avoid this, some sources suggest using air cooling between plates (plate quenching). Alternatively, if oil quenching is used, it can be beneficial to apply an interrupted oil quench - a short quench in oil followed by further cooling in air (e.g., between plates).

Sub-zero Treatment (Optional)

In the available sources there are no clear contraindications to using sub-zero (cryogenic) treatment for 1.2360M steel. It should be emphasized, however, that the manufacturer neither describes nor recommends this step in the official specification, therefore the decision to use cryogenic treatment should result solely from the user’s own experience and informed choice.

Tempering of 1.2360M Steel

Tempering is the controlled reheating of a hardened blade to a chosen temperature and holding it for a set time to reduce brittleness and stresses from hardening and increase the knife’s impact toughness.

Temper immediately after quenching. Time in furnace: 1 hour per 20 mm of material thickness, but at least 2 hours. After each tempering cycle, air cooling to room temperature is recommended.
In practice, two tempering cycles are most commonly used; however, due to the lack of detailed instructions from the manufacturer, we recommend consulting experienced heat treaters for specific guidance. For tempering temperatures of 480°C (900°F) and higher, double tempering is recommended.

1.2360M Steel Tempering Chart

Opinions and Comparison of Steel 1.2360M (X50CrMoV8-1 / ~AISI A8 mod) with Other Steels

Compared to popular steels used in knifemaking:

D2 (1.2379) – D2 offers better corrosion resistance but is more brittle compared to 1.2360 mod,
O2 (1.2842) – O2 is easier to work with and provides good edge sharpness but has lower wear resistance than 1.2360 mod,
440C – Provides better corrosion resistance than 1.2360 mod but lower toughness.
